Is it normal that it's that complicated to install Mac OS in a VM on VMware ESXi 6.7 running on Mac hardware? After a very long loading time (~20 minutes), the installer worked.

All the other search results that I found before that told the exact opposite.

It took me days to find one post on a random blog saying to set smc.present = "FALSE" in the vmx file.

The installer is boot looping every 30 seconds. The read/write performance was as expected for an external HDD. I then tried to use a regular external HD drive and that worked.

Since I was not able to successfully boot the Mac OS installer, I decided to install VMware ESXi 6.7 instead.

It took me hours just to transfer the Mac OS installer ISO. Then, even if I managed to successfully mount and setup the VMFS volume on the external NVMe SSD, the read/write performance was horrible. I successfully install VMware ESXi 6.5, but not without learning that both the ESXi installer and OS do not support the USB-C ports (if you have something plugged-in, it won't boot). I followed this post, also from virtuallyGhetto, as a workaround for the storage issue. I learned about multiple drawbacks concerning the new Mac mini, but I still saw this as a viable solution.

Since the only legit way to run Mac OS VMs is on Mac hardware, it made sense to purchase a Mac to run VMware ESXi. We already have a VMware ESXi server running and we have leftovers vSphere licenses.
